The U.S. administration’s decision to cut off funds to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) is political one aimed to liquidate the Palestinian cause, Hamas leader Rafat Morra said.

In a press release, Morra added that the U.S. administration is trying to liquidate all key issues relating to the Palestinian cause in collaboration with the Israeli Occupation.

Morra noted that the U.S. decision aims to deny about seven million Palestinian refugees their right to return to their homeland from which they were forcibly displaced by Israeli gangs in 1948.

The U.S. administration took such a move on the pretext that funding UNRWA “is not in the best interests of the U.S.’ national interest” and come following, as it claimed, a state of Palestinian “hostility” toward the United States.

Morra warned of serious social and humanitarian repercussions that would influence the neighbouring countries hosting the Palestinian refugees if UNRWA suspended its operations. 

Morra confirmed that the U.S. decision to stop all UNRWA funding would fuel fears especially following the previous U.S. decision to cut off $ 200 million dedicated to relief, development, and medical operations in the West Bank and Gaza.

Morra called on all the Palestinian groups to take political, media, popular, and legal steps to fight off the U.S. decision regarding UNRWA’s support, which best serves the Israeli Occupation’s interest and will lead to catastrophic consequences on the Palestinians. 

“We don’t have financial capabilities to compensate for the absence of UNRWA, even if other sides offered financial assistance,” Morra stressed, adding that the U.N. body shall halt its operations once the Palestinian refugees return to their homeland, only. 

The Trump’s administration had cut the U.S. funding to UNRWA in early 2018, before it decided on August 31 to end all funding to the UN-affiliated agency whose core function is relief services to the Palestinian refugees.
