Hamas leader Usama Hamdan said that his movement has accepted an Egyptian proposal to restore national unity adding that Hamas is waiting Fatah’s response to Egypt’s paper.

In a press release, Hamdan noted Egypt was following up and awaiting Fatah’s response to the Egyptian-proposal paper to achieve the national reconciliation.

Although some Fatah leaders signaled that they would not accept the Egyptian reconciliation proposal, Hamadan called on the West Bank-based party to take a firm stance towards the reconciliation issue.

Hamdan hoped the proposal would receive a positive response from Fatah.

The senior Hamas leader noted that there is no contradiction between the Egyptian efforts to achieve the national unity and the Egyptian-brokered ceasefire talks.

“Meanwhile, Cairo does its best to alleviate the humanitarian situation in Gaza through re-enforcement of ceasefire understandings with the Israeli occupation. In case the Egyptian efforts to achieve the Palestinian reconciliation hit a dead end, this does not mean that Egypt’s endeavours to remove the plight of Gaza would fail”, Hamdan added.

Hamdan confirmed the Egyptian efforts to achieve the national unity would not succeed as long as Fatah declines to show a good intention to end the Palestinian rift, noting than Hamas is keen to bring the reconciliation efforts to success.

Concerning the initiatives put forward by Palestinian figures, Hamdan lauded every effort “exerted to bring about reconciliation and put an end” to the internal division.

Hamadan noted that Hamas has made a number of concessions and showed flexibility to achieve the internal reconciliation.
