Reversing the Oslo Accords is a national necessity to re-establish a new Palestinian political system on the basis of true national partnership, Hamas spokesperson Hazem Qasem said Friday.

In a press release, Qasem pointed out that one of Oslo agreement’s worst outcomes were prompting political division in Palestine and “sowing the seeds of division” among Palestinian factions.

As all segments of the Palestinian people got involved into a popular uprising against the Israeli occupation during the 1987 First Intifada, the Palestinian Liberation Organisation (PLO) entered into negotiations with the Israeli occupation, despite opposition by most of the Palestinian factions, creating national and political divisions among Palestinian factions, Qasem continued.

Qasem stressed that the Palestinian Authority’s insistence to stick to the option of negotiations, despite its failure to achieve any of the Palestinian goals, had heightened the intensity of Palestinian polarization resulting in a long-standing dispute among Palestinian factions.

The Oslo deal, known officially as the “Declaration of Principles on Interim Self-Government Arrangements”, is a “peace” agreement signed between the PLO and the Israeli occupation in Washington DC on September13, 1993 in the presence of former US President Bill Clinton.
