Hamas spokesperson Abdel Latif al-Qanoa welcomed Saturday the head of Palestinian Central Elections Commission Hanna Nasser’s expected visit to the Gaza Strip.

In a press release, al-Qanoa said that Hamas would inform Nasser that it will make sure that holding elections is preceded with factional consensus to ensure success.

Al-Qanoa reiterated his movement’s stance towards the factional initiative to achieve national unity, stressing that Hamas would not backtrack on achieving national reconciliation.

Commenting on Fatah chief Mahmoud Abbas’ failure to respond to the factional vision on national consensus, al-Qanoa said that such move “reflects the state of national isolation that he experiences and the policy of monopoly and autocracy that he practices.”

The Hamas spokesperson called on all Palestinian factions to pressure the Fatah leadership to accept the factional initiative to fulfill the aspirations of the Palestinian people to restore unity and end division.

Head of Hamas Political Bureau Ismail Haniyeh announced last month that his movement has “unconditionally and fully” accepted a vision proposed by eight Palestinian factions to heal inter-Palestinian division.
