The Palestinian Islamic Resistance Movement Hamas called on Wednesday for restructuring national institutions and achieving true partnership among all Palestinian factions at home and abroad.   

Speaking to reporters at a forum about Palestinian elections in the Lebanese capital Beirut, head of Hamas’ Media Division Rafat Morra stressed that the elections is a “significant milestone” to make a change, rebuild national institutions and the Palestinian decision-making process.

“The Palestinian people have the right to choose their representatives in a fair, democratic and transparent way,” Morra added.    

As for the Palestinians living abroad, Morra confirmed that Hamas is keen on reforming the Palestinian National Council as a preliminary and necessary prelude to reactivating the Palestine Liberation Organisation (PLO).    

“Hamas’ priority is to unify the Palestinian people, reinforce the Home Front and work on forming a strong Palestinian political stance to face all plots targeting the Palestinian people and cause,” Morra continued.

To ensure the freedom of expression during the election process, Morra demanded the PA security forces and official institutions not to intervene in the elections and respect public freedoms.

Hamas official warned against any manipulation or change in the voter lists or polling stations, urging concerned states and international organisations to monitor the election process. 

Morra reiterated the necessity for election results and voters’ options to be respected, stressing that Hamas is keen on dedicating the election outcome to endorse the Palestinian rights and cause.

Reaffirming the necessity of Palestinian citizens of Jerusalem to run for and vote in the forthcoming elections, Morra warned against any attempt by the Israeli occupation to prevent Palestinian Jerusalemites from taking part in the election process.
