Hamas has hailed a decision by the Malaysian government to withdraw from hosting Fifa 2017 congress due to the participation of an Israeli delegation.

“This decision reflects Malaysia’s firm position from normalization with the occupation and illustrates the country’s principled support for Palestine,” Hamas spokesman Sami Abu Zuhri said in a press release on Thursday.

“Hamas and Palestinians cherish the Malaysian decision and wish Malaysia prosperity and progress.” He continued.

Malaysia, which refuses to establish ties with the Israeli occupation, was scheduled to host the 67th Fifa Congress in Kuala Lumpur on 11 and 12 May 2017. The Malaysian government has opted to pull out of hosting the event after refusing to issue visas to Israeli delegates.
