On Monday morning, 29 June 2015, the hunger striking detainee Khader Adnan reached a deal with the Israeli Prison Service which would end his 56-day hunger strike in exchange for not being held under administrative detention by Israeli occupation forces anymore, and he would be released on 12 July. That day he ended his hunger strike taking a spoonful of yogurt that was given to him by his mother, who in company with his family members visited him in an Israeli occupation  hospital  for the first time since he declared his hunger strike on  5 May.

The strong will of Khader Adnan prevailed over his jailers. When all political means failed, Adnan was struggling with his body cells to prove to the whole world that his morale and human strength triumph over Israeli tyranny and repression.

Throughout his open-ended hunger strike, Adnan experienced different forms of torture. Due to medical negligence by Israeli forces, his health condition deteriorated in a manner endangering his life. He mostly spent his hunger strike while his hand and leg were tied to the hospital bed although he was unable to move, which was a form of degrading treatment.  His family was prevented from visiting him in spite of the imminent danger he was facing. They were only allowed to visit him one day before he ended his hunger strike, as his wife, children and parents protested in front of "Assaf Harofeh" Hospital where he was receiving medical treatment.

Previous confrontations with the jailer

It was the tenth time that the father of six, who worked as a baker, had been placed in detention without charge. Adnan had spent a total of around six years in jail.

Adnan has previously been on hunger strikes, some longer that his latest one. In 2005, he went on a hunger strike for 12 days protesting his solitary confinement, refusing to end his strike until the occupation agreed to put him out of his solitary confinement cell. In 2012, he refused food for 66 days in a protest that brought him very close to death. At the end of his 2012 hunger strike, Adnan reached an agreement with the Israeli prison authorities that granted him freedom and made the authorities consent to a number of the prisoners' demands. These included granting family visits for prisoners from Gaza, improving the living conditions of Palestinian political detainees confined in Israeli jails and limiting the use of administrative detention.

In July 2014, slightly over two years after that agreement, Adnan was kidnapped together with more than 55 prisoners, most of whom had been set free in the earlier prisoner exchange of 2011, and was again detained  in a notorious Israeli occupation jail under the same administrative detention order that he fought against back in 2012.

On May 8th 2015, Adnan began his third hunger-strike, vowing to make it a battle to the end. 66 days later, the occupation consented to his demands. Today, July 12th, he was freed.

Administrative detention: a form of torture

Adnan's case has exposed the Israeli crimes and violations against the Palestinian detainees, including the administrative detention policy that despite of its incidental and temporal nature, Israeli authorities largely employ it as a punitive measure in violation of the law and the prisoner's right to a fair trial.1

According to Addameer organisation, Adnan is among an estimated 426 political prisoners currently imprisoned  in Israeli jails as administrative detainees. His hunger strike throws a spotlight on some 5,800 Palestinian freedom fighters as well as on the tens of thousands of members of their families, many of whom have been barred from visiting their loved ones for years as they count the days until their release.
